Chinese New Year
2017 is the celebration of the 'Year of the Rooster'. As CNY is a lunar
holiday, it varies in date each year and this year, the public holidays in Hong
Kong were Saturday to Tuesday. With Mike away for work, I decided to take
the boys to Singapore for a few days and we were lucky enough to have my mum
join us from Australia.
We enjoyed a
warm weekend discovering this fabulous city. The boys had never been, so they
were very excited to explore all Singapore has to offer. The general concensus was it was a must visit
city !
On our first
afternoon we did a food tour of Kampong Glam to discover the local Singaporean
food – Malaysian, Muslim and Indian influences. Many of the sweeter options
were not to our taste - there is a pictorial example below. The beans, corn,
palm sugar, coconut cream, durian, shaved ice, bean paste combination was just
a bit much for us all - Max took the bet to taste it and then proceeded to gag
and race to the bathroom. The strong smell of the durian will stick with us for
a long time. The Indian influences were
much more to our liking, making us reflect back on our time in India. The
boys did really well and, we once again realised that when we say 'no peanut
products', it really means nothing. Let's hope by the end of the year, Jack
will be allergy free!!
The tour
provided us with some interesting cultural understanding of Singapore and we were
exhausted by the end of the day.
The next day we
had an early start visiting the Singapore Zoo. We chose to have breakfast with
the Orangutans which was a great experience. We also got to hold some snakes,
feed the giraffes and generally enjoy all the animals in a lovely setting. The Singapore Zoo is must do when in
Singapore - we loved it.
We also really
enjoyed Gardens by the Bay in the afternoon (after Max got over his initial
meltdown about the long walk……. Boys ?) Singapore has so many fabulous places
to visit – that a weekend is really not long enough. After our long day of
walking we enjoyed a very expensive but cold drink at the Marina Bay Sands
before heading back to the hotel for some well earned rest.
Day 1 in
Singapore was a hit 😊
