Our first few days with Mum visiting from Australia have been very busy - not surprisingly ! We wangled a trip to the beach at Clearwater Bay to cool off. The boys had a dip in the bay but we just paddled on the edge and enjoyed the never ending sunshine. The humidity is still very intense and any chance to cool off is very welcome.
We visited one of the local wet markets in Sai Kung for Mum to see some of the local produce on offer. There were loads of seafood - fish of various colours and size, prawns, shellfish, eels, and a thing called 'geoduck' which is the unfortunate shape of a mans penis - allbeit VERY large. Apparently, its an aphrodisiac...... it actually put me off my lunch let alone anything else !! The quality of vegetables available was very different to that of the local supermarket but also limited in fruit options. I was surprised that there were imported apples and oranges from the USA - I thought that was only for the supermarkets stocking for expats.
Sai Kung used to be an old fishing village and is quite fascinating to walk around and see the local shops. The streets are nearly all pedestrians only which makes for please wandering.
Friday night was a fundraiser trivia night for the boys' Auskick teams, here in Hong Kong. It was hosted at the Hong Kong Football Club at Happy Valley Racecourse which is such a great venue. We didn't know anyone there on arrival but had a fun night - obviously didn't win but had a lot of fun and met some other Australians living in HK. Can't say that the Aussies have welcome us with open arms here but hopefully things will change over time. The guest of honour was John Platten from the Hawks (who I didn't know at all) but Mike was dutifully impressed and had a photo with him for fun. There was way too much wine consumed which made for a very slow start on Saturday.
