On Sunday, Max had a birthday party at a trampoline place in Kowloon Bay called, Bounce. I had no idea where it was in relation to home, but didn't think it would be too hard to find with my new best friend 'Google Maps'. So, as I tend to do at the minute, we left 10 minutes early in case I got seriously lost and were pleasantly surprised to find it without any issues. That was, until we discovered that the Comic World Hong Kong 40 conference was on in the same centre.
Oh my.... what a sight this was.
What is Comic World 40 ? It is a convention for all things animae - cartoons, comics, books, games, toys, you name it. And, of course, everyone dresses in their favourite comic character. Now, with so many asian comic characters to choose from, I don't think we saw the same one twice !! and we had no idea who 99% of them were. We saw one very sad, mainstream, western spiderman, who just looked completely wrong compared to all the coloured hair characters in platform shoes.
We were completely amazed by the detail that these guys had gone too and the shear number of participants. I would say thousands of visitors all in character and having a great time together. Everywhere we turned, there were people with blue, pink or orange hair. Outrageous costumes and many of them impersonating their 'comic idols'.
I have never quite understood the comic-con craze. However, I can now see the appeal after living in Hong Kong for a while and the seeing just how many comics and animated shows and movies there are to choose from. I can't ever see us attending one of these conferences on 'purpose' but it was definitely fun to see, none the less.
