What a fabulous way to start a beautiful sunny Sunday in Hong Kong - a hike in the nearby mountains. Many people are unaware of how mountainous and beautiful Hong Kong is, and how numerous the hiking trails are. I was surprised myself to start with but am now enjoying the options available to us for different types of outings in our very own back yard.
The trail we decided today was a reasonably easy trail (even with a very steep start up stairs and a few others along the way) known as the Tai Tam Family Walk. This is part of the 50km Hong Kong trail which meanders through the five parks within Hong Kong Island. We then continued on after we finished that, to walk along section 6 of the trail to the end of the Tai Tam Reservoir road.
We enjoyed being in complete silence (except for Max and his constant chatter....) and being back with nature. The trail was very well maintained and to have space like this so well looked after with no rubbish or fires anywhere to be seen - a space like that in India, is not possible !! Hong Kong is very clean and the maintenance of areas such as this, is fabulous. I will never get tired of being in a place that is not 'constant chaos' !
The water levels in the reservoir were very low but hopefully in the coming monsoonal months, the levels will rise and we can return and walk the trail again to see the difference. The low levels made for some good photos and some very interesting rock erosion marks. The boys loved being able to run and be free of the apartment and also to be in the sunshine in nature.
We didn't really have a plan as to where we would end up, so we just kept going until we started having more people come towards us, and we then thought we were on the way 'out'. Luckily a taxi was at the end of the path and we were quickly back in the land of high rises and the 'fast pace'.
A quick shower and we then met up with an old friend who is in town for a few days. Some Dim Sum for lunch and our lovely Sunday was over. Tomorrow Max starts school, so it was an early night for everyone.
