Boston in July

Our US summer vacation started with a long long long flight from Hong Kong to Boston but we managed to stay civil with each other for the journey and arrived ready for a great US adventure.  We were lucky enough to be surprised at the airport by special friends, the Dickinson's, and then just as lucky to stay with Frank and Kelly in their fabulous apartment in Beacon Hill.

Our first morning started with a wonderful US breakfast and time at Boston Common and the Public Gardens.  The boys even got to play some wiffle ball with friends on the common.  The rest of the day we walked the city as Mike showed the boys ‘his Boston’ - from the years of travelling to Boston for work, he knows the city very very well.  Apart from the Common, went to Faneuil Hall and Quincy market and then walked down Boylston Street, on to the Prudential Centre and took in the view of the city form the observation deck. The boys had a reminder of a Nairn day out in a new city involves a lot of walking and exploring.

On the Saturday we were invited to Frank and Kelly’s place down in Scituate on the coast and took the train down in mid-morning. Frank was unbelievably generous in arranging used baseball mitts, as well as a Red Sox and Patriots hoodies for the boys, which they love. We spent the day at the yacht club swimming, where the boys did not agree with the concept of ‘adult swim’ time, when all the kids need to get out of the pool for an hour in the middle of the day and then for ten minutes every hour !!  Hilarious to see them sit and wait for the nod to be given to get back in the pool. We also went out for a ride on Tom's boat and Max got to drive - he was terrible. What a great day in sun.

On Sunday we walked over to the USS Constitution and met up with some more of our Bostonian friends – Andy and Shibani and kids. We took the boat ride from Charlestown over to the aquarium for the big ride of the day - Codzilla. It is a great ride out on the harbour in a jet boat, and we all got saturate However, the excitement and the sugar from his dad was too much for our friend’s five year old son, and he slept the entire trip which was near impossible with the blaring music and commentary.  After lunch we visited the Frost Ice Bar which is below zero and was very cold even though we were very rugged up – the Ice glasses and drinks didn’t help.

Come Monday, and Mike had to go to work, so the boys and I met up with the Dickinson’s and did the Duck Tour of Boston and then the Science Museum.  Tuesday was Mike’s birthday and we celebrated in style by going to Fenway Park to watch the baseball where the Red Sox were playing the SF Giants.  This was the boy’s first baseball game and they loved it - Big Papi smashed a Home Run, the Sox won for the boys, and Max got to belt out "Sweet Caroline"!

All in all our first few days in the US and our time in Boston was fabulous – next stop Connecticut.
