My memories of my childhood are full of images of my brother and I, along with our cousins doing EVERYTHING together. Whether it was playing at one of the many family farms in the district, at school, at polo, and generally having a blast. We were a motley crew (speaking for myself I suppose) but we all looked out for each other and had a great time doing it.
We are now spread near and far but am sure that most of us have a smile on our face when we think of all the fun times we had. Christmas at Woodbury was always a memorable time to get together, along with Boxing Day picnics. The photo below is not everyone but a good chunk of the older cousins, along with Grandma and Grandad. In fact, I am pretty sure there isn't any photos of us all together - damn. I am not going to embarrass anyone with tales of doing things wrong but there was always someone else there, to either join in the fun or to stop you before things got too dangerous. Cousins are special for us all.
I was lucky enough to catch up with one of my cousins on the weekend. BJ and her family came to visit and our kids playing together reminded me of many of the silly things 'we' did many years ago. Our five kids have not had anything to do with each other previously but just ran off together like they were cousins catching up after not seeing each other for a couple of weeks. It makes me so happy to know that the kids have 'extended' family wherever they go.
The kids managed most issues on their own and entertained each other, while the grown ups chatted and probably drank a wee bit too much wine (no surprises there though....) Sadly, we did have one scary motor bike incident that luckily ended with everyone still in one piece. However, a few more grey hairs for the adults ...... Apologies again BJ !!
Kids will be kids........
