Shanghai Day 1

We had the loveliest trip to Shanghai on the weekend. We mainly went to see the AFL game that was being played there - Port Adelaide v GC Suns, however, it also gave us the opportunity to discover a new city.  Another one ticked off in Asia !!

On our first day, I had arrange for us to do a food tour with 'Untour Food Tours'  (http://www.untourfoodtours.com) - must do if ever in Shanghai.  We met at 9am without having any breakfast - and thank goodness for that!  We visited 4 different dumpling places - can't really call them all restaurants - mainly small hole-in-the-wall family businesses.  The food was AMAZING !!!  As they say in Shanghai, "the country uses the CPI to determine the state of the economy" - the Consumer Pork Index....... pork, pork, pork.  We tried Fried, Steamed, Boiled and all different types and flavours.

At the end of the tour we then got to have a go at making our own dumplings.  This was so much fun and we all managed to create something edible.....  not sure it will be a weekly inclusion in my menu but it was definitely lots of fun.

One of the crazy things about the dumplings was the cost - for 16 of the best pork dumplings I've had, we paid 20 Yuan - less than $4 AUD.

During the morning we wandered through the streets of the French Concession area in Shanghai, and it really did feel very French.  Strange that such a huge city could feel so different in areas.  There are over 24 million people living in Shanghai, but it really didn't feel that crazy.  The French Concession area had beautiful tree-lined streets and most people rode pushbikes, which made for a lovely feeling as we wandered the back streets.  Shanghai is a relatively young city and is very cosmopolitan in nature.  We were lucky to have great weather and the pollution levels were low on our first day.

After our fabulous morning, we headed back to the city and wandered around the financial area a bit before hitting the hotel pool.  Finding our way back to the apartment was challenging, as we the hotel was part of a huge mall.  So I asked a help desk lady for some directions and she said, in her best English, "take the lift and walk to the beer shop, then go left".  I thought, "hmm, that will suit Mike'.  Anyway, as we exited the lift we couldn't see a liquor store in sight - but we did see the beautiful jewellers 'De Beers'.  hee hee - Chinglish.

In the evening we wandered along the boardwalk and enjoyed the area along the Bund. This area is very well known and has great views at sunset - very nice to enjoy with a glass of vino. What a fabulous start to a long weekend in Shanghai.

Many photos for you to get a glimpse of Shanghai.
