On Sunday, we joined the many rugby loving fans in Hong Kong at the Asian Qualifying round for the Rio Olympics. Mike's parents were in town, so we thought we would show them another side to living in Hong Kong.
Mike and I were lucky enough to go the Hong Kong sevens 14 years ago and it was great to be back at Hong Kong Stadium and enjoying the festivities. It wasn't anywhere near as busy as the Sevens is in April, but in true HK style, the food and drinks were managed well and the entertainment fabulous. They had live bands, Chinese drummers, Brazilian dancers, mascots....... so much fun for the kids. There were both men and women's games and the atmosphere was great. The countries competing are below.
We often see the HK girls training on a Monday night where Jack has his soccer training - so it was nice to see them in action and cheer them on. The crowd was full of young rugby kids and the boys are now hoping to play rugby next year. There goes my Sunday sleep ins...... There was also a huge support network for the Philippines - due to large number of helpers supporting their home country.
Sadly, both the HK men and womens' teams didn't make it through to automatic qualification for Rio, but they both still have chances of getting there through additional upcoming games. We can highly recommend watching Sevens in Hong Kong - bring on April !!
